LAVAL, Québec, Canada | Jan 9, 2006 | BioSyntech, Inc. (“BioSyntech” or the “Company”) (TSX-V: BSY) announced today that BST-CarGel is the subject of a study published in The Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery (JBJS, American Volume). The paper, entitled “Chitosan-Glycerol Phosphate/Blood Implants Improve Hyaline Cartilage Repair in Ovine Microfracture Defects”appears in the December issue (2005;87:2671-2686) of JBJS Am, which is widely acknowledged as the most highly regarded clinical orthopaedic journal.
The study describes the ability of BST-CarGel to repair damaged cartilage in the knees of sheep. “Detailed animal studies such as ours are extremely valuable because they permit in-depth scientific assessments of both the quality of the repair and its underlying mechanisms, information that is very difficult to obtain in human studies,” said Dr. Caroline Hoemann, a senior researcher in the Department of Chemical Engineering and Institute of Biomedical Engineering at Ecole Polytechnique of Montreal, and the first author of the paper. “BST-CarGel demonstrated statistically superior cartilage repair compared to the control, due to novel mechanisms which have not been previously observed.”
In addition to this publication, two presentations at the upcoming 6th Symposium of the International Cartilage Repair Society (ICRS) held during January 8-11, 2006, will describe recent work completed with BST-CarGel, and will be given by Dr. Hoemann as well as Dr. Michael Buschmann, also of Ecole Polytechnique. This year, Dr. Buschmann is a symposium invitee serving as both a keynote lecturer and a presenter at the Cartilage Repair Think Tank sponsored by the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine, which will convene prior to the symposium.
BST-CarGel is currently being tested in a multicenter, randomized clinical trial being carried out in . The data from this pivotal trial will support Canadian and European product approvals, and may be instrumental in gaining regulatory approval in the .
