PALM BEACH GARDENS, FL, USA | Mar 29, 2006 | AmeriPath, Inc., a leading national provider of physician-based anatomic pathology, has developed a new assay that detects and quantifies a mutation in the Janus kinase 2 (JAK2) gene common in bcr/ablnegative myeloproliferative disorders (MPDs). The JAK2 V167F Mutation Analysis, available through both AmeriPath and Specialty Laboratories, can aid in or confirm the diagnosis of polycythemia vera, essential thrombocythemia, or idiopathic myelofibrosis, thereby giving physicians a dynamic new diagnostic tool to more effectively manage treatment decisions for improved patient outcomes.
With its maximized specificity and sensitivity, this new assay offers physicians the following:
• Potentially earlier and more confident diagnosis of bcr/abl-negative MPD patients • Rapid, real-time PCR analysis for earlier implementation of appropriate treatment • A quantitative result that provides a reference point for future patient assessments
“ We’re very excited about how this test can improve the assessment of myeloproliferative disorders,” said Russell L. Maiese, M.D., National Director of Hematopathology, AmeriPath, Inc. “It’s an outstanding development for AmeriPath, but more importantly, it’s a valuable one for our physicians and their patients.”
