Andreas Fibig named new Chairman of the Board of Management of Bayer Schering Pharma Print E-mail
26 Jul 2008

Dr. Bernd Metzner to become new Board member of Bayer’s pharmaceuticals subsidiary / Arthur Higgins and Werner Baumann to refocus on their leadership roles in the Bayer HealthCare subgroup following the successful integration of Bayer Schering Pharma

Leverkusen, Berlin, Germany | July 25, 2008 | Andreas Fibig, currently a Senior Vice President at U.S. pharmaceuticals company Pfizer, has been appointed Chairman of the Board of Management of Bayer Schering Pharma (BSP) effective September 1, 2008. The decision was made at a meeting of the company’s Supervisory Board on July 24, 2008. In addition, Dr. Bernd Metzner, currently Head of Finance at Bayer S.p.A., Italy, will assume responsibility for Central Administration and Organization (CAO) at Bayer Schering Pharma effective October 1, 2008. In this context, Arthur Higgins, the current Chairman of the Board of Management of BSP, and Werner Baumann, current CAO head for BSP, will return to focusing on their primary roles as Chairman and CEO of the Bayer HealthCare subgroup and head of BHC CAO respectively. Both Higgins and Baumann have performed dual functions at BHC and BSP since Bayer’s acquisition of the former Schering AG in 2006.

“The integration of Schering into the Bayer Group has been largely completed,” explained Werner Wenning, Chairman of the Board of Management of Bayer AG and Supervisory Board Chairman of Bayer Schering Pharma. “In the initial phase it was very important for Mr. Higgins and Mr. Baumann to play leading roles in the merger of the activities, in addition to their primary duties at Bayer HealthCare. However, because it was originally planned that these dual roles would be provisional, both gentlemen will now refocus on their leadership functions at Bayer HealthCare. I am confident that in Andreas Fibig, we have found a manager with much international experience who will lead BSP toward a successful future.”

In the future, Arthur Higgins will focus on leading Bayer HealthCare and driving the company forward. In addition to Bayer Schering Pharma, this Bayer subgroup also comprises the Animal Health, Consumer Care and Diabetes Care divisions.

“Bayer HealthCare is outstandingly well positioned in all its fields of business,” Higgins commented. “Following the successful integration, Bayer Schering Pharma has shown stable growth: Our OTC business is now the global number two; Diabetes Care has been successfully realigned and is growing well above market; and our Animal Health business is among the most profitable in the industry. The appointments of Andreas Fibig as the new head of the global pharmaceuticals business and of Bernd Metzner as a new member of the BSP Board of Management add two excellent managers to our leadership team.”

Fibig, who was born in Berlin on February 23, 1962, is returning to his career roots after launching his professional career with a trainee program at the former Schering AG, followed by a vocational training course as a pharmaceutical commercial assistant. In 1983 he assumed the function of Country Coordinator with responsibility for sales and marketing in Malaysia, Singapore and Hong Kong. In October 1984 he left Berlin to become a pharmaceutical manager at Boehringer Ingelheim KG, where he held positions of increasing responsibility over the next 15 years, eventually becoming head of the Mercosur region. In 2000 he moved to Pharmacia GmbH as head of German operations. Three years later, he transferred to Pfizer as head of Latin American operations following the U.S. company’s acquisition of Pharmacia. From January 2006, Fibig was also given responsibility for Pfizer’s operations in Africa and the Middle East. Since last year Fibig has served as Senior Vice President with responsibility for the company’s Central Nervous System, Inflammation and Pain business in the United States.

The new CEO of Bayer Schering Pharma is married and has two children.

Dr. Bernd Metzner was born on October 13, 1970 in Stuttgart and was raised in Bavaria. He studied business administration at the University of Siegen and, after obtaining his Ph.D., passed his examination as a tax consultant. Dr. Metzner began his professional career in 1999 with a trainee program in finance at Bayer AG, then transferred to the tax consultancy Flick, Glocke, Schaumburg in Bonn. In 2002 he returned to Bayer AG, initially performing assignments in the Finance Department. In 2003, he became assistant to the Chief Financial Officer, coordinating projects such as the carve-out of the chemical operations and the subsequent founding of the new company Lanxess. Since March 1, 2005, Dr. Metzner has served as the Head of Finance and Administration at Bayer S.p.A. in Italy.
