The US-dominated worldwide market of drugs for treatment of attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in children, adolescents and adults reached a volumen of US$ 2.783 bln in the year 2006. Despite the threat of generics to replace first generation drugs, growth perspectives are excellent due to the large potential of the underserved European market and treatment potential of adults with ADHD. Furthermore, the appearance of more molecules which are not schedule II controlled substances will facilitate acceptance of new drugs. More than ten new ADHD molecules are in clinical development or in approval processes. Most of them are not psychostimulants and, therefore are not controlled substances.
